is there anything that they can do? voting for the president's plan would ace taxes. perhaps democrats think if they can add the extension of the state tax cut. that is part of the negotiation that is going to go on between the scenes. >> the reason is because they know the reality is, and we have seen it time and time again. congress acts when they are up against the deadline. we are close to it. but it won't be until they are facing the cliff that many will

does it seem more likely now that we are headed off the cliff? democrats are are not going to budge. if there was one thing that was clear about what president obama and the democrats campaigned on, was this fall back plan or the small piece of tax cuts being extended for 98% of american families and small businesses. there is a big in the senate sitting there now that the fous could vote on. the house could call a vote on it right now and 98% of america's family could see

protection of their tax cuts extended. so i think that is a strong position for the democrats. the majority of american people agree that the wealthy can afford to pay people more. >> you believe president and leaders prefer going over the cliff, but republicans do have the option of locking in tax cuts for most americans right now. >> as you said, the president can increase taxes and point the coin fer at the republicans. but we need to have spending cuts. this is not an issue that is going to be resolved with taxes right away.

the house has issued legislation that would extend the tax cuts and erase the military cuts. but something else that came up, secretary geithner issued a letter today warning the country that we are going to hit the debt ceiling on new year's eve. congress needs to wake up and smell the cau tee that the spending needs to be addressed. >> so david, hard to believe that we are still talking about this. did you see it happening like this? >> is washington so pro den that they can't find a compromise. >> i think the country will get back on track, but it is going to take a prwhile.

damage has been down. business plans are down. business sentiment is down. we are are going to pay a price. the senate hasn't acted or called back to act on a bill between christmas and new year's for 49 years. i think the prospects are strong that we are going to go over the cliff. the republicans are going to clearly get most of the blame if we go over the cliff on taxes but the republicans have an argument. the president promised us. he would put on the table spending decreases. when you look at the

republicans, was it a mistake? >> they could have had a more popular message right? >> the truth is they would have been a lot better off taking the deal. it was a better deal all the way around. they missed that moment. but i think the real thing is who pays the price. >> but the people who are boeing to pay the price is americans. it is nuts to be putting us through this. >> all of the focus on tax cuts. but the revenue will barely make a dent in the deficit. is this president has put on the

table quite an extraordinary amount of spending cuts to the shagrin of democrats i might add let's remember that this president has never walked away from the bargaining table. republicans will get the blame but does that mean that we shouldn't try? >> no. americans are the ones that are going to be hurt if the middle class families. there is a bill where the house could pass it to protect the majority of america's middle class families.

which is a worse fate or voting to increase taxes on wealthy americans. they can come back and cut taxes in the new year and look good. >> it is not what looks worse. it is what is worse for the american people? >> doesn't that seem to be what they are worried about? >> to your point about tax increases, what we are looking at now, it is like a mortal wound gushing out of our chest. they come along and put a ban dade on our forehead. we need to not just raise taxes. if we give the president every tax increase that he wants.

we need to address the spending. >> and the president has addressed that. no one is saying that there should be no spending cuts. >> ultimately. we have to find a bring here to get across. what are the ways we can agree on that will help us through that. i would would brry if we get do our fox holes and shoot across at each other. you know our international reputation is going to suffer. every other country in the world and watching this is going to say is america prepared to leave? >> you can't trust these guys, they are not up to it. >> if the nation slides into a
